How to choose aerospace fasteners?

It is not easy to enter the space for a screw. From the beginning of raw materials, after tempered, according to the highest standard selection, after numerous tests and a variety of tedious processes, a small screw is eligible to get the space pass, into the whole arrow and the whole star assembly link. The materials used to make aircraft must follow the principle of lightweight and high strength. Aluminum alloy is the first choice, followed by other materials.

There are many raw materials commonly used in aerospace fasteners according to different uses, and the most used is iron alloy, that is, various kinds of steel. Of course, what is needed here is a stronger steel, namely ultra-high strength steel. There are special properties of steel, such as stainless steel, and heat-resistant steel. They all have applications, such as aircraft engines, landing gear, fasteners for launch vehicles, and structural parts made of this material. In addition, titanium alloys have applications, but because titanium alloys are more expensive, their application is limited. The rest is aluminum alloy, designed to reduce the weight of the aircraft. Introduction of aviation fasteners:

There is a wide variety of aerospace fasteners. At present, it is mainly divided into rivets, bolts (screws), nuts, single-side fasteners and other product types. Each category includes a variety of varieties and specifications to meet the needs of installation in different materials and structures. In aerospace fasteners, the most common fastener is high-strength rivets, the use of which can reach hundreds of thousands of pieces.

Then some less common products are different from commercial fasteners, such as “talking bolts”. The bolt has a small light-colored ring on the head, and sensors measuring up to five microns thick are attached to the top of the bolt in an embroidery-like process. Combined with the special measuring instrument, it can accurately measure the preload of smart bolts in real-time in situ, remind the user whether the bolt is installed in place, and improve the measuring accuracy by 10 times. There is also a “stealth bolt”, all products of countersunk head height size is controlled within 0.05 mm, only about half of the hair, which can make the surface of the aircraft after assembling the skin smooth as satin. The high-temperature resistant bolts are processed with refractory alloys including niobium, tungsten, and tantalum, and an anti-oxidation ceramic coating is sintered on the surface of the bolts. Wearing the “ceramic coat”, the bolts can withstand the high temperature of 1800℃.
