Diameter: The screw diameter depends on the wood’s hardness and the joint’s strength requirements. Thicker screws provide stronger joints but require pre-drilling to avoid splitting the wood.

Type: Select the appropriate type of wood screw based on the material (e.g., softwood, hardwood), the environment (indoor or outdoor), and the finish or aesthetic requirements.

2. Marking and Alignment

Precisely mark the points where you intend to insert the screws, ensuring they align properly to join the wood pieces as intended.

Use a square or ruler for accurate alignment.

3. Pre-drilling (Pilot Holes)

Pre-drilling pilot holes are crucial, especially in hardwoods, to prevent the wood from splitting. The pilot hole should be slightly smaller than the screw’s core diameter (minus the threads).

5. Driving the Screw

Align the wood pieces as intended.

Using the appropriate screwdriver or drill bit (matching the screw’s drive type), drive the screw through the first piece of wood and into the second, ensuring it goes straight.

Tighten the screw until the head is flush with the wood surface (for flat or countersunk heads) or until it pulls the wood pieces tightly together (for round or pan heads).

6. Final Adjustments

If the screw heads are not meant to be visible, you can cover them with wood filler and then sand the surface for a smooth finish.

Check the joint for tightness and alignment, making any necessary adjustments.
