How to Properly Use Square Weld Nuts

Many people are familiar with weld nuts, designed for welding. These nuts are known for their high strength and broad application range. However, the high temperatures during welding can cause the components’ connection deformation, so they are typically used in situations where disassembly is not required.

The most common types of weld nuts are hexagonal weld nuts and square weld nuts. Square weld nuts are more frequently used in fields such as electrical engineering, road traffic, and furniture construction materials. However, improper handling during the use of square weld nuts can lead to problems such as welding porosity and excessive deformation, which may affect the connection’s effectiveness.

As a professional fastener manufacturer, XINCHI is happy to share important details to keep in mind when using square weld nuts.

Thickness Considerations: Square weld nuts are suitable for welding thin plates with a thickness of less than 6mm. This reduces the amount of deformation and results in a more aesthetically pleasing weld seam. If the thin plate is too thick, significant deformation may occur.

Welding Power Supply: During the welding process, DC (direct current) should be used, with the negative pole connected to the welding end. This helps avoid defects such as welding porosity and cracks.

Protective Gas and Welding Parameters: Square weld nuts require strict control of the protective gas and other parameters. The protective gas should be 99.9% pure argon. When the welding current is between 50-150A, the argon gas flow rate should be 8-10L/min. When the welding current is between 150-250A, the gas flow rate should be 12-15L/min.

Welding Angle: To ensure that the argon gas effectively protects the weld pool and to facilitate the welding operation, the tungsten electrode should be positioned at an 80-85° angle to the workpiece. The angle between the filler wire and the surface of the workpiece should be kept as small as possible, typically around 10°.

Cleaning Before Welding: Before welding the square weld nut, it is crucial to clean the welding area of any oil, rust, or other contaminants to avoid welding porosity.

Safety During Welding: Protective measures should be taken in windy environments, such as using windshields to ensure safety during the welding process. If welding indoors, proper ventilation should be ensured to allow for adequate air exchange.
