How To Use Carriage Nuts?

Carriage nuts, also known as T-nuts or pronged nuts, are a type of fastener commonly used in woodworking, furniture assembly, and other applications where a strong and secure connection is needed between a threaded stud or bolt and a wooden surface. They are called “carriage nuts” because they are often used in carriage bolts to fasten items to wood.

Here’s how you can use carriage nuts:

1.Gather Your Materials:

Carriage nut(s)

Bolts or threaded studs of the appropriate size

Wooden surface or material you want to attach to

2.Choose the Right Size:

Ensure that the carriage nuts you’re using match the size of the bolts or threaded studs you plan to use. The threaded portion of the bolt should match the internal threads of the carriage nut.

3.Prepare the Wood:

Drill a hole in the wood where you want to attach the carriage nut. The hole should be slightly larger than the widest part of the carriage nut but smaller than the outer flange.

4.Insert the Carriage Nut:

Place the carriage nut into the hole you’ve drilled, with the prongs facing down toward the wood. The flanged side should be facing upward.

5.Secure the Carriage Nut:

To prevent the carriage nut from rotating while you tighten the bolt, you’ll need to embed the prongs of the nut into the wood. This is usually done by hammering the flanged side of the carriage nut gently. As you hammer, the prongs will dig into the wood, holding the nut in place.

6.Attach the Bolt:

Insert the threaded end of the bolt or threaded stud into the internal threads of the carriage nut. Turn the bolt clockwise to tighten it. As you tighten the bolt, it will pull the connected material against the wood, creating a secure connection.

7.Tighten and Fasten:

Continue tightening the bolt until the connected materials are securely held together. Make sure not to overtighten, as this could damage the wood or the carriage nut.
