How To Use Rivet Nuts?
In the previous article, we introduced What Are Rivet Nuts, and today we’d like to share a step-by-step guide on how to use rivet nuts.
Using rivet nuts, known as threaded inserts, involves a few key steps. These inserts allow you to create strong, reusable threads in thin materials.

Materials and Tools Needed For Using Rivet Nuts
- Rivet nut(also known as nutsert or rivnut)
- Drill and appropriate drill bit
- Rivet nut installation tool(manual or power tool)
- Marker or punch for marking holes
- Measuring tools(ruler, calipers)
- Deburring tool(optional, for cleaning up holes)
Step-by-Step Instructions
For Using Rivet Nuts
Select the Right Rivet Nut and Drill Bit:
Choose a rivet nut that matches the thread size you need.
Select a drill bit that matches the outer diameter of the rivet nut’s body. The rivet nut manufacturer usually specifies the correct size.
Mark the Hole Location:
Measure and mark the location where you need to insert the rivet nut.
Use a punch to make a small indentation, which helps to keep the drill bit from wandering.
Drill the Hole:
Drill a hole at the marked location using the selected drill bit.
Ensure the hole is clean and free of burrs. Use a deburring tool if necessary to clean up the edges.
Insert the Rivet Nut:
Thread the rivet nut onto the mandrel of the installation tool.
Insert the rivet nut into the drilled hole. Ensure it sits flush against the material surface.
Set the Rivet Nut:
Squeeze the handles of the manual installation tool (or activate the power tool) to compress the rivet nut. This action pulls the threaded portion of the nut upwards, causing the unthreaded portion to expand and grip the back side of the material.
Continue until the rivet nut is securely fastened. The tool will have a mechanism to release the mandrel once the rivet nut is set.
Remove the Tool:
Unscrew the tool from the installed rivet nut. Check the rivet nut to ensure it is firmly in place and the threads are accessible.
Install Your Fastener:
Once the rivet nut is installed, you can screw your bolt or screw into the newly threaded hole.
Tips For Using Rivet Nuts
- Material Thickness: Ensure the material you are working with is within the thickness range specified for your rivet nut.
- Practice: If you’re new to using rivet nuts, practice on a scrap piece of material first to get a feel for the process.
- Tool Choice: Manual tools are sufficient for occasional use, but if you’re installing many rivet nuts, consider a pneumatic or electric tool for efficiency and ease.
By following these steps, you can effectively use rivet nuts to create strong, durable threads in thin materials, making it easier to attach components securely.
