Introduction and Classification of Retaining Rings
A retaining ring, or a snap ring, is categorized into two main types: internal retaining rings (for bores) and external retaining rings (for shafts). Its primary function is axial positioning, preventing other components from axial displacement. Typically, retaining rings are manufactured using sheet material through stamping processes, forming a tapered functional cross-section. After assembly, the contact is mostly “linear.” For larger specifications, wire-wound forming is employed, where excess material is trimmed, resulting in a regular rectangular cross-section and providing “surface contact” post-assembly.
The function of Retaining Rings
Many people ask: What is the purpose of a retaining ring? Is it a sealing component?
Retaining rings do not provide a sealing function. Instead, they are protective and supportive components made from compression-resistant materials, often with a rectangular cross-section. They are mounted in grooves to serve as static seals when used together with elastic sealing rings.
Due to their tight fit in the groove, retaining rings prevent compressed elastic sealing rings from being extruded into the sealing gap, thus maintaining the sealing effect.
Types of Retaining Rings
Retaining rings are divided into two main categories: internal retaining rings (for bores) and external retaining rings (for shafts). These rings function as axial limiters, preventing other components from axial movement.
Manufacturing processes often involve stamping from sheet materials, producing a tapered cross-section that ensures “linear contact” after assembly. Wire-winding methods are used for larger sizes, with excess material trimmed to form a regular rectangular or concave cross-section.
Classification of Retaining Rings
Flat Retaining Ring
A separable, mostly flat washer with inner or outer portions acting as a flange for the inner or outer ring of a cylindrical roller bearing.
Angled Retaining Ring
A separable ring with an “L”-shaped cross-section, with the outer portion serving as an inner flange for radial ball bearings.
Intermediate Retaining Ring
Found in two-row or multi-row roller bearings, it is a separable ring used to separate and guide different rows of rollers.
Flanges
Flanges are narrow shoulders parallel to the rolling direction and protruding from the raceway surface. They are used to support and guide rolling elements, ensuring they remain within the bearing.
