Common Types of Pins

In mechanical applications, pins are mainly used for assembly positioning and connection and overload shear connections in safety devices. Types of pins include: cylindrical pins, tapered pins, pins with holes, cotter pins, and safety pins.

How are Pins Classified?

The basic forms of pins are cylindrical pins and tapered pins. Cylindrical pins are fixed in the pinhole by a slight interference fit. Repeated assembly and disassembly can reduce positioning accuracy. Tapered pins have a 1:50 taper, which allows them to self-lock. They are fixed in the pinhole by the pressure of the tapered surface, providing high positioning accuracy and ease of installation, with the ability to be assembled and disassembled multiple times.

What to Consider When Selecting Pins?

The selection of pin types depends on the operational requirements. For connection purposes, the pin diameter can be determined based on the structural characteristics of the connection, and strength calculations may be performed if necessary. The size can be directly determined for positioning pins according to the structure. The length of the pin in each connection component is typically 1 to 2 times its diameter.

The common materials for pins are 35 or 45 steel. The materials for safety pins include 35, 45, 50, T8A, T10A, etc., with hardness ranging from 30 to 36 HRC after heat treatment. Pin sleeve materials can be made of 45, 35SiMn, 40Cr, etc., with hardness ranging from 40 to 50 HRC after heat treatment.
