The Applications of Buttress Threads

In the previous article, we introduced the advantages of buttress threads, and today we will share the applications of buttress threads.

Buttress threads are commonly used in applications where high axial force needs to be transferred along the screw axis in one direction, such as in:

Screw jacks and clamps, where heavy loads are lifted or clamped.

Presses, where material is compressed or shaped.

Certain types of valves and piston assemblies in hydraulic equipment.

The petroleum industry, for casing pipes that need to withstand high axial loads during drilling operations.

While buttress threads are highly efficient for their intended use, they are not as effective in applications where forces are significant in both directions along the thread axis or where repeated cycling of loads in opposite directions is common. For those scenarios, other thread profiles like square, Acme, or trapezoidal might be more appropriate.
