What Are The Types Of Fastener Thread?
In the previous article, we introduced What Are The Functions Of Fastener Thread. Today we, Xinchi Fastener Company, continue to share some types of fastener thread.
Fastener threads are critical components in engineering and construction, providing the mechanical means for holding objects together. There are various types of fastener threads, each designed for specific applications, materials, and requirements. The primary types of fastener threads include:

Metric Threads: These are based on the International System of Units (SI) and are commonly used worldwide. Metric threads are defined by the pitch, which is the distance between thread peaks, measured in millimeters.
Unified Threads: Also known as Unified Thread Standard (UTS), these are predominantly used in the United States and Canada. Unified threads are defined by threads per inch (TPI) and come in three main classes: UNC (Unified Coarse), UNF (Unified Fine), and UNEF (Unified Extra Fine).
ISO Metric Threads: Similar to metric threads but specifically adhere to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) specifications. They are interchangeable with metric threads but follow stricter international standards for dimensions and tolerances.
British Standard Whitworth (BSW): Characterized by its unique thread angle of 55 degrees, this type is common in older or traditional equipment, particularly in the UK.
British Standard Fine (BSF): A finer variant of the BSW thread, offering a higher thread count for a given diameter, which provides a stronger grip in some applications.
Pipe Threads: Designed for sealing and joining pipes, these threads can be tapered (NPT – National Pipe Tapered) or straight (NPS – National Pipe Straight). Tapered threads create a seal through the thread engagement, while straight threads rely on a gasket or O-ring.
ACME Threads: Characterized by a trapezoidal shape, ACME threads are designed for heavy loads and transmission of power. They are often used in vices, jacks, and lead screws.
Buttress Threads: These have a saw-tooth profile, providing high strength in one direction. They are often used in applications where high axial force is needed in one direction, such as in press screws and clamping devices.
Square Threads: With a simple square-shaped cross-section, these threads are designed for high load and low friction, ideal for screw jacks and clamps.
Each type of fastener thread is designed with specific considerations in mind, such as the ease of manufacture, the strength of the joint, the ability to resist loosening, and the suitability for the materials being joined. The choice of thread type depends on the application’s specific requirements, including the environment (e.g., corrosive, temperature extremes), the materials being fastened, the direction and magnitude of loads, and the need for disassembly.
