Basic Tips on Installing Locking Washers

Locking washers are not only locking devices that prevent loosening but also high-load locking devices that are suitable for all environments with strong vibrations. When used and installed correctly, the nuts and bolts will not need to be re-tightened, ensuring the safety of the fasteners. So, what is the safe installation method for locking washers? 1. The installation of locking washers is simple. Place the two washers with their internal slanted teeth facing each other, between the nut and the connected materials.
2. After the nut is tightened, the radial protrusion surface of the locking washer on the outside will engage with the two end contact surfaces. The slanted teeth on the inner side of the washer will have an angle greater than that of the bolt’s thread angle.
3. When the bolt is stretched due to mechanical vibration, the nut will rotate and loosen. However, the friction on the outside radial protrusion surface of the locking washer is greater than that on the inner slanted teeth surface. In this state, only relative movement between the inner slanted teeth surfaces occurs, generating an uplift tension. As the bolt stretches, it contracts again.
4. When the bolt contracts, the slanted teeth on the washer will return the nut to its original position.
5. Locking washers are suitable for flat and relatively smooth metal surfaces.
6. If the connected material is non-metallic, a metal plate can be fixed to the connection material to allow the use of the locking washer.
7. There is no need to use a torque wrench when installing locking washers.
8. Pneumatic tools may also be used during the installation or removal of locking washers.
