Corroded Bolts

Another cause of bolt breakage is corrosion. There are many forms of corrosion, including ordinary corrosion, chemical corrosion, electrolytic corrosion and stress corrosion. Electrolytic corrosion is: First, fasteners are exposed to various wetting agents such as rain or acid mist. Stress corrosion is relatively limited. Stress corrosion exists under high tensile load and it mainly affects fasteners of high-strength alloy steel. Alloy-steel fasteners (especially those with high alloying composition) are prone to crack under the action of stress. Initially, a crack pit is formed on the surface, and further corrosion occurs, which causes the crack to propagate at a rate determined by the stress on the bolt and the fracture toughness of the material. A fracture occurs when the remaining material becomes too functional to withstand the applied stress.
