The spring steel cage holds the nut in the mounting hole and gives it some flexibility during installation. This is also why a cage nut can usually be removed and installed again.

Before reusing a cage nut, check a few basic things:

• The spring cage is not bent or damaged
• The cage still has enough tension
• The threads are not worn or damaged
• There is no heavy rust or corrosion

If everything looks good and the cage still holds the nut firmly, the cage nut can normally be reused.

When Should Cage Nuts Be Replaced?

A cage nut should be replaced if the spring cage is badly bent or has lost its tension. In this condition, it may not stay securely in the mounting hole.

Damaged threads and heavy corrosion are also signs that a new cage nut is needed. Since cage nuts are relatively simple and low-cost fasteners, replacing a damaged one is usually better than continuing to use it.

How to Reuse Cage Nuts

When removing a cage nut, try not to force the spring cage. Too much pressure can deform the cage and affect how well it holds the nut.

After removal, check the cage and threads before using it again. During reinstallation, make sure the cage nut sits properly in the mounting hole, and the screw goes into the threads smoothly.

If the cage nut feels loose or does not hold properly, replace it.
