Common Cage Nut Installation Mistakes and How to Avoid Them
Cage nuts are commonly used in server racks, cabinets, and electrical enclosures. Problems can arise when the wrong size is used or the cage nut is not installed correctly. Xinchi Fastener Factory shares some common installation mistakes and tips to avoid them.

1. Using the Wrong Cage Nut Size
Cage nuts are available in different thread sizes, including M5, M6, M8, and inch sizes. Using the wrong size can make screw installation difficult or leave the connection loose.
Before installation, check the cage nut thread size and make sure it matches the screw. The mounting hole dimensions and panel thickness should also suit the cage nut.

2. Incorrect Cage Nut Installation
If a cage nut is not properly fitted into the mounting hole, it may move or come loose when the screw is inserted.
Make sure the cage clips securely onto the panel and the nut is correctly positioned. If it does not fit, check the hole size rather than forcing it into place.

3. Cross-Threading the Screw
Inserting a screw at an angle can damage the threads of a cage nut and make the connection difficult to tighten.
Start the screw by hand and keep it straight. If it does not turn smoothly, stop and check the alignment before continuing.

4. Over-Tightening the Screw
Excessive tightening can damage the threads, deform the cage, or affect the mounting panel.
Follow the recommended tightening torque for the application. Avoid applying excessive force, especially when working with thin sheet metal.

5. Choosing the Wrong Cage Nut Finish
Cage nuts used in humid or corrosive environments may rust if their material or surface finish is unsuitable.
Choose a cage nut with appropriate corrosion resistance for the application. Check the nut and cage for damage before installation.
Choosing Cage Nuts for Your Application
Choosing the correct thread size, cage design, and surface finish helps prevent installation problems and provides a more reliable connection.
